Moroccan furniture is normally solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain too. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish control.

This means that Moroccan furniture and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are prominent in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

If combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can transform your home. Walls are usually emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photographs or paintings hanging among them.

Reds and browns are the predominant colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often copied out in bold lettering and framed.

Moroccan accessories such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can bring that special local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded cloth furniture.

Pillows feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use sofas and seats in the European manner. Morocco is well-known for its leather craft and leather is often used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Scatter rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country when you travel a few miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural parts and camel hair is turned into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you would like to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you would like to dine in Moroccan style, they usually eat at a very low round table with the primary dish in the centre from which everyone helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others as well.

Following tradition and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everybody will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature highly in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards frequently with very sweet cakes covered with icing sugar and syrup.

People take it easy at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low offered by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common ways to highlight extraordinary areas and light up corridors and some doorways. Often these sconces do not contain candles, but hold aromatic oil with a floating wick which is less expensive to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

Farmhouse garden furniture is otherwise called rustic garden furniture and harkens back to the olden days of farms and country living. It is a style all of its own and is quite distinctive. Generally, farmhouse garden furniture is lumpy, bulky and heavy. Sometimes it is roughly hewn, but that is not always the case although it is rarely carved in great detail. Farmhouse garden furniture is made to last.

Farmhouse garden furniture includes the complete assortment of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, gazebos and arbours. Farmhouse garden furniture is customarily made of local wood, but can also be made of iron.

To compliment the garden furniture, there is also indoor furniture in the farmhouse style although this might be a little finer, a little less heavy so that it can be moved around for cleaning purposes.

Farmhouse garden furniture is usually made from local hardwood such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, teak or beech, but in fact anything that is to hand. Softwood, such as pine, is cheaper, but it does not usually last as long as hardwood even if it is maintained regularly and properly.

Hardwood furniture may be stained, oiled or varnished, although it is normally best to just rub linseed oil into the natural wood. A bit of staining may help bring out the beautiful natural graining in the timber.

Softwood garden furniture is normally full of knots which many people find ugly. If this is how you think, then you can give the furniture three coats of paint in order to safeguard it.

If however, the knots do not worry you, you can stain and varnish it instead. In either state of affairs, all farmhouse garden furniture should be maintained every year in the autumn; that is when the sun is no longer at its hottest and before the rain and cold weather set in. The trouble with anything manufactured of any wood is rot.

Hardwood contains more natural oils than softwood so it is better able to protect itself, but all wood ceases producing these oils when you kill it by cutting it down. The oil on the surface is dried out by the sun and these dry patches then suck some oil up from deeper inside itself, but the further inside it needs to draw the oil from the less it can suck, which means that eventually the outside becomes dry and then it will suck in water.

When that happens, rot has set in. Hardwood can last a couple of years before it gets to this sorry state, but softwood will probably last less than a year. This is why you have to seal the oil in and the water out with paint or varnish in the case of softwood or replenish the oil by rubbing in linseed oil in the instance of hardwood.

You could paint hardwood too if you want to, but most people buy hardwood farmhouse garden furniture because it has a lovely grain and paint would only cover up that grain. Decent farmhouse garden furniture is not cheap, but it is attractive, difficult to steal and will last a lifetime if well looked after by a few hours maintenance once a year.

If you have just moved home or have just finished redecorating, you may be thinking that it is time to buy some new furniture too. However, new furniture can make a big difference to the feel of your home and it is not cheap, so it is best to do a little homework on how to choose furniture before you leap in and commit yourself to spending a small fortune.

Some people like to live in the newly decorated apartment or house for a while to get a feel for what will suit the ambiance first. However, sooner or later, you will just have to bite the bullet and start trudging around the malls and the Internet. Catalogues and brochures are a decent starting place and a source of free ideas. Next come the monthly ‘Home’ magazines. Show rooms in the big stores and on the Internet can generate ideas too.

Are you drawn to wood? Many people are and it needs become an ever more rare and thus valuable resource, particularly the hardwoods and even more particularly the foreign hardwoods like teak and mahogany.

Some home-grown hardwoods are just as expensive, think of walnut and then you just have the ordinarily expensive ones like cherry, oak, cedar, maple and willow. Less expensive, but still not cheap are pine and birch.

If you like the gorgeous dark colour of mahogany but cannot afford it, you could always stain a cheaper timber the colour of mahogany. It is not difficult and you can attain very satisfactory results. One word of advice that all interior designers give though, is not to have different colour timbers in the same room.

You can mix different types of wood, but they should all be near enough the same colour. If you have different colours either move some pieces of furniture to a different room or stain the lighter ones to complement the darker ones. The other way around does not work, you cannot stain something lighter.

If you do not want to commit yourself to going into debt to get all you new furniture at once (and who can blame you), it is a good idea to buy the one article of furniture you see somewhere that you really, really like. Say a beautiful table or cabinet or suite of chairs. There is no need to be too practical here as you probably already have something to sit on, eat off, put things in and stand the TV on.

The point is that you are no longer happy with the items of furniture that you have and want to change them. Buy your lovely thing and throw something out. Keep your eyes open for the next lovely thing that matches your first lovely thing and when you have the money, buy it and throw something else out. You will have a patchwork quilt of a house for a time but if you tackle the house room by room, you will get there soon enough.
